Outrage: David Archuleta Concert Canceled

Local fans of Utah singing legend and defeated American Idol finalist (sniffle) David Archuleta have one more reason to feel cheated after the unfair cancellation of a charity concert Archuleta was scheduled to play tonight at Salt Lake City's E Center. Idol producers reportedly nixed the show because they were worried about its cutting into ticket sales for the American Idols Live tour, figuring that once fans had seen David perform solo, they probably wouldn't pony up the $65.50 (plus taxes and surcharges) to watch him share the stage with nine screeching goblins.

"They're just going to reschedule the event for a later time," says David's father, Jeff, who, hilariously, appears to have set this up himself without asking anybody. "When all the minds met, everyone concluded this wouldn't work out for this particular weekend, and they just want to reschedule it for toward the middle or the end of the [American Idol summer] tour." But that's not for another few months! This is a community in mourning now! And the last thing it needs is a lame group show featuring Kristy Lee Cook's earache of a soprano or the plodding, out-of-tune "musical" stylings of David Cook. Proceeds from Archuleta's concert were to go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, which is now expected to be deluged with wishes to egg Nigel Lythgoe's Ferrari.

Nick Dwyer, music geek and host of C4's new music-travel show, Making Tracks
When did you guys make the series and head overseas?Filming began in September last year and we did it in two trips. We did China, India and Israel, from September to November, then we came back to Auckland and did some editing. Then we left again in January, and did the second leg, Brazil, Jamaica and South Africa.Was this all a bit of an excuse because you wanted to go travelling?To be honest, it's something I've been working towards for quite a while. Myself and James Anderson, who I worked with on the project, we've done a couple of shows about music culture around the world. Eventually we worked on the idea lots and lots and it came through.How did you chose the places that you went to?I don't know. For me, personally, we chose places that are really musically vibrant countries that you don't get to see on your screens often in New Zealand. We see countries like China and Israel through news feeds, that's how we get most of information about these countries. We don't know much about this thriving underbelly of vibrant music that's happening. Obviously, places like Brazil and Jamaica are some of the most dynamic music scenes in the world.




Logistically, how did you set these things up?I'm a self-confessed music geek so before we went overseas I did a lot of research, got in touch with people and, in terms of the New Zealand music covers, we sent all the artists the tracks before we got there and when we arrived they were all ready to go.From the shorts, it almost looks as if you pitched up and asked street carnival band to play some Bic Runga.That's very true! A major element of the show is these covers of New Zealand tracks. But another big element of the show is me pushing New Zealand music in whatever way I can. When we were over there, we'd get a tuk-tuk and slap together a sound system and be driving around with it on the day. We blagged our way into a TV channel in South Africa and played a Scribe video. A lot of that sort of stuff came about when we got there and we were like "right, how can we have some fun with this".Do you think you helped the Kiwi music cause or do people overseas now think we're all mental?No! It's really funny, I just got a YouTube link today of one of the artists that we worked with, we gave her a NZ music T-shirt, she was this Brazilian artist. It's her performing at this concert and she's wearing this NZ music T-shirt. Off the back of it, some of the covers that we've done other DJs and radio stations are playing them around the world. Everyone loved the music and it's really great to see this NZ music that we pushed has taken on a life of its own.

David Beckham has pledged his love to wife Victoria by spending over €3,300 on a new tattoo.
The footballer's new design shows the Spice Girl posing as a naked angel - a copy of his favourite photo of his wife from a Brigitte Bardot-inspired shoot for Pop magazine almost four years ago.
The tattoo, inked onto his left arm, is Beckham's 11th. He already boasts designs bearing his wife and three sons' names.
A source close to the couple told the Mirror newspaper: "They are both thrilled with the result. It's been beautifully done. Victoria was flattered."
Beckham showed off his new tattoo during his visit to Brazil.  The footballer is in the country to launch his third soccer academy.

Arcade Fire to sue TV station?

Arcade Fire are reportedly considering taking legal action against the Fox TV network for using their music without permission during Sunday's Super Bowl in Arizona.
According to music website Pitchfork, Fox did not ask the Canadian band if it could use their hit 'No Cars Go' on the advert for the National Football League, which aired during the half time show.
The band's representatives are currently considering whether they should pursue the matter.

Winehouse to perform at Glastonbury

Glastonbury Festival organisers say Amy Winehouse will perform at the world-famous outdoor music event in southwest England this year.The singer will play the main Pyramid Stage on June 28 just before headliner Jay-Z.Winehouse's tumultuous personal life continues to make headlines. She was arrested and questioned by police this month about video footage that appeared to show her inhaling fumes from a crack pipe. Police later said the singer would not be charged.

Indiana Jones - Fords Mountain Rescue Role

INDIANA JONES star HARRISON FORD is transferring his on-screen adventuring skills to real life - he is a voluntary mountain rescue worker in his spare time.

The legendary actor uses his talents as a qualified pilot to rescue lost and injured hikers in the mountains of U.S. state Wyoming.

But Ford admits he is getting sick of his heroic part-time job - because the rescued hikers always appear on U.S. TV to boast about their unexpected celebrity meeting.

He explains, "I've got really tired of picking them up and having them show up on television the following day. The next time I think they're going to do that, I'll maybe push them back out."

Cannes Film Festival - St Trinians Set For Second Cinema Field Trip

The girls of St Trinian's will return to the screen in 2009, Ealing Studios has confirmed.

Unveiling its international roster at the Cannes film festival, the legendary British production house confirmed a follow-up to the 2007 box office hit will begin shooting in January 2009.

Russell Brand, Colin Firth and Rupert Everett starred in the revival of the classic comedy series while Gemma Arterton - who played the head girl of the unorthodox school - used the film as a launching pad to win a role in Quantum of Solace, the 22nd James Bond movie.

The directing team of Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson will again helm the project with Thompson telling Variety he hopes the majority of the St Trinian's cast members will return for St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold.

"It would be good with St Trinians to get the old gang back in," he added.

But for Dorian Gray, Parker's upcoming adaptation of the Oscar Wilde novel, the pair are planning a "sexy, contemporary feel".

Other Ealing Studios films announced included Where Hands Touch, the second film from Bafta-winner Amma Asante.

The historical drama tells of a mixed-race German girl who falls in love with the son of a high-ranking SS officer.

Natalie Brenner, the studio's head of international sales, said Asante's script "blew us all away".

"She is interested in dealing with racial issues in a difference way," she added.

Gosford Park screenwriter Julian Fellowes also featured in the festival announcement, with his wartime drama From Time To Time set to begin shooting imminently.
